Cheektowaga, New York, is a town in Erie County, just east of Buffalo. Its name comes from the Seneca word “Ji-ik-do-wah-gah,” meaning “place of the crabapple tree.” The area was first settled by Europeans in 1808, with Appollos Hitchcock among the early pioneers. Cheektowaga was officially established as a town on March 22, 1839.
Originally a farming community, it has grown into a thriving Buffalo suburb. Cheektowaga includes the villages of Sloan and part of Depew and is home to the Buffalo Niagara International Airport, an important travel hub for the region. With its deep-rooted history, convenient location, and strong community presence, Cheektowaga remains an essential part of the Buffalo-Niagara metropolitan area.
